Gail Geriane: Building Worlds Through Images
Gail Geriane is a Manila-based fashion and lifestyle photographer whose lens captures more than just images — she builds worlds. Originally from Northern Samar, Gail has developed a distinct eye for storytelling that moves seamlessly between intimate portraits and bold editorial spreads. With features in Art+ and Nylon, she has carved out her place among the next generation of Filipino image-makers.
What began as a fascination with capturing moments quickly evolved into something deeper: a way of shaping identity through images. Each photograph became more than documentation; it became a perspective, a visual language distinctly her own.
Over time, that language grew into a world. Her photography transformed from skill into a reflection of self, one that resonated with others who recognized their own stories in her work. Through patience, persistence, and vision, Gail has built not just a portfolio but a creative identity — one that carries the power to connect, to inspire, and to remind us that building a creative life is both possible and profoundly necessary.
To learn more about her journey, we sat down with Gail to talk beginnings, evolution, and the inspirations that continue to shape her lens today.
When and why did you first pick up a camera?
I first picked up a camera back in 2008, when I was in high school and had just stumbled upon Tumblr. That space unfolded a whole new universe for me — a world of fashion, photography, and art that felt limitless. I was captivated, and in trying to translate that wonder into something of my own, I started a blog and began to shoot. That’s where it all began.
Walk me through your creative process — from concept to final image — and how you decide what stories you want to tell.
I usually begin with a single element. it could be a color, a person, or even just a fragment of a story. From there, I start building the mood and visuals around it, gathering references and imagining how it could unfold. For me, the process is like weaving — layering inspirations, symbols, and feelings until the concept takes on a life of its own. By the time I reach the shoot, the image already exists in my mind; it’s just a matter of bringing it into reality.
Are there particular designers, brands, or movements whose values align closely with your own creative vision?
I’ve always been drawn to showing the nuances of womanhood — the beauty, the struggles, and the strength that come with it. Women’s empowerment has always been at the heart of my creative vision, and it’s a constant source of inspiration that drives me to keep creating.
How do you approach lighting and composition to create the atmosphere you want in your images?
It really depends on the peg and the mood I’m aiming for. some concepts call for softer, more natural light while others need something bolder or more dramatic. I usually come in with a vision, but I also like to experiment on the spot, adjusting lighting and composition as I go to capture the atmosphere in the most authentic way.
Is there a dream subject, setting, or theme you’d love to explore that aligns with your vision of style?
It has always been a dream of mine to go back to my home province, Northern Samar, and photograph the women there — to highlight their natural beauty and strength while showing love for my roots. It’s a way of honoring where I came from and weaving that into my creative vision.
Would you be open to sharing one piece of advice for someone just starting out in photography or creative work?
My advice would be to focus on building your own creative identity, really figure out what makes your work feel like you. Don’t be afraid of criticism; it can push you to grow and improve. And most importantly, have fun with it. enjoy the process of creating and experimenting.
